Who We Are 130 Years On

A Brief History
Youings have always been renowned in North Devon for their tobacconist shop at 1 High Street in Barnstaple. However, few realised that behind the scenes in the shop there was a thriving wholesale business.

Founded in 1884, the business has been passed down through four generations and is now run by Peter and his team. In 1988 the wholesale business moved to more suitable premises located on the Barbican Industrial Estate.

Since the move the wholesale business has expanded dramatically, extending our delivery area as a result. As a consequence of our renowned service and our wider distribution area, Youings Wholesale has been awarded preferred supplier status to Devon County Council Schools as well as contracts to supply Mole Valley Farmers, University of Exeter, Petroc College, TNS Catering, National Marine Aquarium and Tone Leisure.

In 2008 Youings acquired Havana Coffee Company, a coffee and tea wholesaler supplying foodservice accounts such as coffee shops, hotels and pubs as well as retail packs for independent retail outlets. Havana Coffee Co. also supplies and services coffee machines to suit all needs as well as providing barista training.

Youings Wholesale is a member of Sugro, the largest independent buying group in the country, who offer regular big brand promotions backed up with personalised printed leaflets. In 2013 Peter Youings was elected Chairman of Sugro.

This year sees our 130th birthday. The business has certainly seen a lot of changes within that time but the same effort and commitment has always been apparent, upholding the Youings motto of ‘Service with Quality’.
